A Beacon of Light

This week, I was blessed to have an article about my mission work in the local newspaper, The Beacon. It’s interesting that this is its name because there is nothing more than a small river that runs through town; there are no big lakes close by, and certainly none that warrant the need for a beacon or a lighthouse, which is the newspaper’s logo. So I’m really not certain why or how the paper got its name.

However, when considering the nature of the article housed in the center of this week’s issue, there could be no better name.

A beacon is defined as: a guiding or warning signal, as a light or fire, especially one in an elevated position; a person or thing that illuminates or inspires.

You don’t need to look very hard to see the Biblical meaning there.

And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. [Exodus 13:21]

Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. [Psalm 119:105]

You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. [Matthew 5:14]

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ [John 8:12]

I pray that my story helps to serve as a beacon.
