It’s official. I am going back to Zambia in 2015. For the whole summer.
I am going to partake in Overland’s (the organization we went with in October) three-month missionary training program, known as AMT.
For the majority of AMT, I’ll be living at the base taking missions courses, such as 4X4 Driving and Recovery, Bush Cooking, Cross Cultural Communication, Missionary Theology, Preaching, and Wilderness First Responder (medical). For one week each month, we’ll be out on expedition, learning through experience in ministry.
AMT is the required first step in becoming an Overland missionary. For me, it’s partially a test to see what it’s like to live in Zambia on a more long-term basis and to grow closer to the Lord and receive insight on what He has planned for me. But it’s a definite possibility that I could join Overland as an expedition leader (just during the summer while in school) and aiding in recruitment while I’m in the US during the school year. But even if I don’t go with Overland, AMT will still be a great experience and something to put on my resume. Whether with Overland or another organization, I know I want to aid in recruitment, planning, and leading for short-term missions.
AMT is something I’ve been going back and forth about for almost 6 months. At first, I loved the sound of it, but dismissed it due to intimidation, as AMT is extremely challenging, not to mention the prospect of raising twice as much financial support as I did for our trip in October. When we went to Zambia, I heard more about AMT through past and current students, and several people tried to convince all of us to come back for AMT. Whether via AMT or just a short term expedition, I knew I wanted to come back in 2015. After going back and forth for about a month post-trip, I finally jumped. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous, but thankfully I have a Father who loves doing the impossible.
